A recent survey by the French Foreign Ministry found nearly 1.5 million French citizens living abroad and registered at the French consulate premises.
However, as registration with the consulate is not mandatory, the authorities estimate that the actual number of people living abroad is about 2 million.
The census showed that the most popular destination of choice is Switzerland (138,349), followed by the United States (117,076) and the United Kingdom (112,660).
If not registered in the consulates are added, then the authorities estimate that the number of French expatriates living in the UK around 250,000, (possibly a similar number living in the U.S.).
This figure is similar to the number of British expatriates believed to be living in France, even if added second homes, the total number of people in the UK who own a property in France is believed to be between 350,000 and 500,000.
The figures for Switzerland and as Germany (106,842), reflecting the large number of French commuters and business owners who have chosen to live in neighboring countries, mainly by tax reasons.
Other popular destinations for relocation of the French are Belgium (90,588), Spain (82,050), Canada (68,075), Morocco (36,818) and China (22,231).
French in London
The census showed that about 60% of French people in the UK lived within Greater Of London with most aged between 25 and 40 years, confirming the widely held view that most of the French in the UK to work, not retire!
In fact, South Kensington, South West London is often referred to by the French as Le Quartier franà § ais of London, which houses hundreds of houses for families French, the French Embassy, French Institute and a wide range of French food shops and bars.
There is also a great Frenchman and © Lycée that attended by about 3000 French children, while elsewhere in the south and west London there are several schools of motherhood and an elementary school French.
The census showed that the number of French citizens living abroad had increased by 7.6% in the last year and during the last ten years has increased an average of 3.6%.
Although the countries of Asia and the Middle East accounted for only 8.5% and 6.6% respectively, of those living abroad, these countries also showed the highest growth of 10% and 12.6% over last year.
